Elmarshausen Castle, Water castle in Wolfhagen, Germany.
Elmarshausen is a brick water castle built on the north bank of the Erpe River and surrounded by a moat. The building sits within the Habichtswald Nature Park at 230 meters in elevation and displays restored east, north, and west facades.
The castle was first documented in 1442 and passed from the Helfenberg family to the Gudenberg lords before Hermann von der Malsburg acquired it in 1515. The Malsburg family shaped the building over centuries and their descendants still own it today.
The castle displays features of Weser Renaissance architecture that shaped how buildings were constructed in this region during the 1500s. Its rooms and facades show how the nobility lived during that time.
The castle is privately owned and can only be visited through guided tours organized by the family. Visitors should arrange in advance to secure a tour time and learn about the restoration work and life within the castle.
The castle chapel was renovated in 1740 and consecrated in 1742 to serve the Oberelsungen community. This renovation shows how the building adapted to new needs across the centuries.
