Weißgerbermuseum Doberlug-Kirchhain

Weißgerbermuseum is a technology museum housed in an original tanning workshop built in 1753, documenting leather production practices through its preserved space and equipment. The building contains historical tools, machinery, and techniques that reveal how this craft worked at its core.

The tanning workshop was built in 1753 during an era when Kirchhain became an important leather production center. By 1900, the town was home to nearly 100 tanneries before industrial competition gradually displaced this tradition.

The museum holds leather and pelt samples from five continents, ranging from mouse to elephant hides, revealing how craftspeople applied different techniques worldwide. These materials show the variety of resources artisans transformed into everyday goods across different cultures.

The museum is open on Tuesday through Thursday and offers guided tours by advance reservation. It is helpful to contact ahead to arrange a visit time and learn more about what the exhibition covers.

The museum includes a functioning tannery production line with complete equipment alongside the historical workshop. This demonstration area shows visitors the entire manufacturing process in a working environment.
