Burg Gerswalde

Burg Gerswalde is a medieval water castle in Brandenburg featuring rectangular design and brick construction. The site surrounds a central courtyard and preserves remains of fortification structures and residential buildings.

Construction of the castle began in the mid-13th century under orders from the Margraves of Brandenburg. The fortification served to protect Ascanian territories from claims by neighboring Pomerania and Mecklenburg.

The ruins display architectural features from medieval Brandenburg, with a residential tower and vaulted ground floor spaces that show how medieval residents organized their fortified homes. You can see how the structure reflects the building traditions of that era.

The site is accessible from April through October, allowing visitors to explore the ruins in their exposed state. It is advisable to wear appropriate shoes for uneven terrain and to be careful during wet weather.

The walls of the fortification display remarkably solid construction that survives today in several meters of height. This engineering demonstrates the skill required to build a water castle designed to last through centuries.
