Winklmoos-Alm, village in Upper Bavaria, district of Reit im Winkl
Winklmoos-Alm is a broad high plateau in the Chiemgauer Alps, sitting at around 3,840 feet (1,170 meters) above the Bavarian town of Reit im Winkl. The open terrain is made up of gentle meadows dotted with scattered mountain huts and simple houses spread evenly across the flat ground.
The plateau has been farmed for centuries by mountain families who kept cattle and made cheese through the warmer months. The road connecting it to Reit im Winkl was built in 1956 and can only be used when there is no snow on the ground.
The name Winklmoos-Alm simply describes what you see on arrival: a wide alpine meadow above the village of Reit im Winkl. Farmers still bring their animals up in summer, and the rhythm of the plateau follows the seasons rather than the clock.
In summer, you can reach the plateau by car along a toll road or by bus from Reit im Winkl below. In winter the road closes due to snow, and a gondola or shuttle bus becomes the only way up.
Winklmoos-Alm was recognized in 2018 as an International Dark Sky Park, the first of its kind in the Alps. On a clear night, the sky above the plateau is dark enough to see over 5,000 stars with the naked eye, including the Andromeda galaxy.
