Villa Alstede, Heritage manor estate in Nottuln, Germany
Villa Alstede is a manor estate complex in Nottuln with multiple structures built from local Baumberger sandstone. The ensemble includes the main residence, a fortified grain storage building, and a former storage structure, whose forms reflect the building traditions of the region.
The estate was first documented in 1217 as part of the Aegidiikloster monastery in Münster and passed through several noble families over the centuries. The Schulze Hauling family purchased it in 1825 and undertook major renovations in 1908 that introduced new design approaches.
The Schulze Hauling family shaped the estate through their lifestyle and artistic tastes, reflected in the handcrafted interior details throughout the rooms. Visitors today can trace these personal touches in spaces that reveal how the wealthy family lived in the early 1900s.
The grounds can be explored on foot and reveal all buildings in their spatial arrangement from the outside. The sandstone structures are easy to navigate even in wet weather and offer good photo opportunities from various angles.
The former grain storage building features basement gun ports and a large sandstone fireplace on the upper floor, marking its dual role as fortification and residence. This military equipment on a storage building is unusual in the region and suggests the estate held strategic importance in earlier times.
