Rigomagus, Roman archaeological site in Remagen, Germany.
Rigomagus is a Roman military fort located in Remagen on a raised terrace overlooking the Rhine River. The site preserves foundations of various structures, including a large administrative building whose remains lie beneath the Roman Museum.
The fort was established in the early years CE as a military stronghold and remained in use for roughly three centuries. The garrison changed hands several times before the site was eventually abandoned as Roman power declined.
The fort served as a hub where soldiers from across the Roman empire gathered and left behind records of their daily lives. The site shows how different communities coexisted in this military outpost on the Rhine.
The site is easily accessible on foot from the town center and well marked for visitors. The museum provides clear information about the artifacts and site history through displays and informational panels.
A notable discovery is the tombstone of an early Christian woman named Meteriola, indicating that people continued living here long after the Roman era. This finding shows that settlement at the location extended far into Late Antiquity.
