Nydam Boat, Iron Age wooden boat at Gottorf Castle, Germany

The Nydam Boat measures 23 meters in length and 3.5 meters in width, constructed with oak planks using clinker-building techniques from 320 AD.

Danish archaeologist Conrad Engelhardt discovered the vessel in Nydam Bog during 1863, leading to its relocation to Germany following the Second Schleswig War.

The boat represents early Northern European maritime technology, demonstrating advanced construction methods that influenced later Scandinavian shipbuilding traditions.

Visitors can examine this ancient vessel at the Iron Age Exhibition within Gottorf Castle, where it stands as the primary maritime archaeology display.

The vessel required 36 rowers to operate at full capacity and featured a distinctive steering oar that influenced modern nautical terms such as starboard.
