Preußisches Düppel-Denkmal, Military monument in Dybbøl Banke, Denmark
The Preußisches Düppel-Denkmal was a 22-meter-tall sandstone monument built on the foundation of former Danish fortification number 4 at Dybbøl Banke in Sønderborg Municipality. The structure featured elaborate relief sculptures and inscriptions that marked the site as a significant historical memorial.
Constructed in 1872, the monument commemorated the victory of Prussian forces during the Battle of Dybbøl on April 18, 1864. It served as a testament to a military conflict that reshaped the region's political landscape.
The monument featured three relief sculptures depicting critical moments of the siege, including the construction of siege batteries and the final assault. These carvings told the story of a turning point in the conflict through stone.
The original structure no longer stands, having been demolished in May 1945 with its remains buried in a nearby gravel pit. Visitors today will find memorial stones and information plaques marking the site and explaining its layered history.
The site transformed from a symbol of Prussian military dominance to a place of reconciliation, where Danish and German forces now conduct joint ceremonies since 2010. This shift shows how the same location can carry entirely different meanings depending on who tells its story.
