Alssund Bridge, Road bridge in Sønderborg Municipality, Denmark
The Alssund Bridge is a 662-meter road crossing that links the island of Als to mainland Jutland, featuring a main span of 150 meters to allow ships to pass. The structure carries a major highway and supports steady traffic flow between the two areas.
Construction started in 1978 and finished in 1981, with Queen Ingrid inaugurating the structure on October 19. The completion created the first permanent land link across the strait, ending long decades of isolated travel between the two areas.
The bridge links two communities previously separated by water, making daily travel and commerce between the island and mainland seamless for residents. It transformed how people on both sides interact and work together across the strait.
The bridge is open year-round for vehicle traffic and forms the main north-south transport link in the region. Be aware that strong winds or storms can create challenging driving conditions across this exposed waterway.
The structure was designed with specific engineering to handle the powerful winds and tidal forces of the Alssund waters. This specialized approach allowed builders to create a stable crossing in a challenging maritime environment.
