Kong Christian den X's Bro, Road and railway bridge in Sønderborg, Denmark
Kong Christian den X's Bro is a combined road and railway bridge spanning the southern section of Alssund, connecting the Jutland peninsula to the island of Als through Sønderborg's center. The structure stretches about 331 meters long and roughly 13 meters wide, featuring a bascule section in the middle that lifts to allow passing vessels through.
The bridge was constructed between 1925 and 1930, replacing an older pontoon structure from 1856 that measured only 220 meters. The new construction significantly improved connectivity between Jutland and Als and was regarded as an important infrastructure advancement for the region when it opened.
The bridge is named after King Christian X, connecting it to Denmark's royal history and giving the structure a sense of national identity. It forms a natural gathering point in the city where people cross between two regions, shaping how the community experiences its own geography.
The bascule mechanism allows vessels to pass through when the middle section lifts open. Visitors and commuters should be aware that traffic delays can occur during these openings, especially when larger sailboats or ships use the passage.
In 2022, the bridge was draped in yellow fabric for 100 days to celebrate the Tour de France and mark its role in the international cycling event. This temporary transformation made the structure visually distinctive during one of sports' most watched competitions.
