Alcimoennis

Alcimoennis is a Celtic settlement located on a plateau where the Danube and Altmühl rivers meet, spanning a substantial area. The site contains multiple defensive structures with walls and gates, along with residential and working areas from ancient times.

The settlement was active between 450 and 380 BCE and underwent several phases of construction and rebuilding. Archaeological findings show that the inhabitants reinforced and expanded their fortifications over time.

The people who lived here worked with iron and bronze, creating tools and objects they traded across the region. You can sense their craftsmanship in the remains scattered across the site.

The site covers a large area and parts are overgrown, so sturdy shoes and plenty of time are recommended for exploring. A guide or information center on location helps visitors understand the different areas and their purpose.

Excavations revealed a burial ground with different types of graves, showing how the people honored their dead. This cemetery lies east of the main settlement and offers insights into ancient burial practices.
