Alcimoennis, Celtic settlement ruins in Kelheim, Germany
The archaeological site extends across 600 hectares at the meeting point of the Danube and Altmühl rivers, featuring multiple defensive walls and gates.
The Celtic settlement flourished between 450 BCE and 380 BCE, with archaeological evidence indicating three farms containing at least fifteen buildings at its peak.
The settlement's inhabitants specialized in iron and bronze production, with extensive mining operations covering more than half of the elevated plateau.
The archaeological site contains three separate fortification sections surrounded by trenches, constructed using post-slot technology visible in present-day remains.
The excavations revealed thirteen inhumation graves and six cremation burials in a necropolis located east of the rectangular enclosure.
