Nellingen Kaserne, Military barracks in Ostfildern, Germany.
Nellingen Kaserne is a former military complex in Ostfildern, Baden-Württemberg, that once included aircraft hangars, administrative buildings, and residential quarters. The grounds have since been converted into Scharnhauser Park, a planned neighborhood with housing blocks, green areas, and public facilities.
The barracks were built in 1935 as a German military facility and passed into American hands after World War II. They stayed under US control until 1992, when the site was handed over for civilian redevelopment.
The site once housed the Theater Military Police School, where US soldiers trained during the postwar years. Some of the original structures are still standing in what is now a residential neighborhood, giving the area a layered appearance.
The former barracks grounds are now open to the public as Scharnhauser Park and can be walked or cycled through freely. The area is well connected to Ostfildern and Stuttgart, so it works well as a stop on a longer day out.
When the site was redeveloped, materials salvaged from the original military buildings were deliberately worked into the new park structures. A careful walk through Scharnhauser Park reveals these older elements embedded in walls, paths, and small constructions across the area.
