Lanken, Nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
Lanken is a nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein covering 256 hectares across six municipalities and featuring pioneer grasslands, mineral meadows, herb borders, small water bodies, and wet grasslands. These varied habitats support a diverse range of plants and animals throughout the year.
The area served as a military training ground until 1994, after which it was designated a nature reserve in November 2009 under registration number 203. This transition marked the shift from military to ecological use of the land.
The name Lanken comes from Slavic language heritage and reflects historical linguistic influences in this northern region. The open landscapes with their grasslands and water features shape how the area looks and feels.
Visitors can walk and cycle on designated paths while watching birds and amphibians throughout the reserve. Staying on marked trails helps protect the delicate habitats within the area.
The reserve experiences regular flooding during autumn and winter months, creating temporary wetlands that attract migratory birds. Herons and other species that rarely visit the region during other seasons arrive in larger numbers during these flood periods.
