Stadtpfarrkirche St. Marien, church building in Beelitz, Germany
The Stadtpfarrkirche St. Marien is a brick church built in Brick Gothic style in Beelitz. Its tall, straight walls and simple windows define its appearance, while inside, large pillars create open spaces defined by stone and brickwork.
The church was first documented in 1247 and contains stones from that era in its walls. Over the centuries, it was raised and renewed after fires, with a flat roof in three sections added around 1511.
The church is named after Mary and marks the center of Beelitz on Kirchplatz. Next to it stands the eight-sided Wunderblutkapelle, a small building that recalls early baptisteries and keeps alive the memory of a local miracle story.
The church stands on Kirchplatz in the center of Beelitz and can be viewed freely from the outside. From April to September, it is possible to reach the viewing platform at the top of the building with a key usually arranged in advance at the church office.
The Wunderblutkapelle next to the church recalls a medieval legend from 1235 when blood allegedly became visible on cloth during a church event. This event made the church a pilgrimage destination that attracted people from across the region.
