Alt-St. Nikolaus, Romanesque church in Kessenich, Germany
Alt-St. Nikolaus is a Romanesque church building in Kessenich with a rectangular tower on its west side and three naves. The structure displays typical Romanesque architectural features and underwent major renovation between 1965 and 1970.
The main hall dates to the medieval period and ranks among the oldest surviving church buildings in the Bonn region. The left side nave was added around 1590, while the right side nave came much later between 1749 and 1750.
The church is named after Saint Nicholas and reflects the religious importance this place has held for the Kessenich community across the centuries. Visitors can see today how the interior space serves for worship and community gatherings.
The church remains active today and opens its doors for religious services and community events. Those interested in exploring the building should inquire about hours for individual visits.
The baptismal font inside was crafted from Drachenfels trachyte stone in 1571 and displays the skilled craftsmanship of that era. This work in local stone remains a notable detail that speaks to the religious practices of an earlier time.
