Stern-Garagen, Cultural heritage monument and multistorey car park in Kapellenberg, Germany
Stern-Garagen is a six-story car park with three lift towers that move vehicles between different levels. The building features skylights on the top floor and is served by the Marianne-Brandt-Straße public transportation stop.
The building opened in January 1928 as one of Germany's first reinforced concrete multistory car parks, built to handle growing vehicle numbers in European cities. Its creation marked an important moment in early automotive history and how cities adapted to new transportation needs.
The ground floor houses the Museum for Saxon Vehicles Chemnitz, showing the story of regional car manufacturing in this preserved building. Visitors can see how the historic structure became a place to remember the area's connection to automobiles.
Multiple working lifts make it easy to reach different levels of the building. Its location near public transportation and in central Kapellenberg makes it simple for visitors to access.
The building was originally more than just a car park, combining repair shops, spare parts storage, and driver facilities all under one roof. Among only three similar structures in German-speaking regions, it was a model for modern, multi-use mobility centers.
