Mindener Glacis, Urban park in Minden, Germany
Mindener Glacis is a green belt surrounding Minden's city center and linking several park sections together. Within this space sits a botanical garden and the Schwanenteich pond, a body of water fed by natural water flow.
The site was originally part of Minden Fortress, which was dismantled in the 1870s following the German-French War. The former military installation was then transformed into public gardens and green spaces.
The different park sections carry names reflecting their positions within the former fortress grounds, telling the story of the site's military past. Visitors can walk through these named areas today and experience how a fortification became a public garden.
The grounds are easy to walk through thanks to well-maintained paths, allowing visitors to explore the entire site on foot. The best time to visit is during dry weather, when all paths and gardens are fully accessible.
Sections of the original fortress walls remain visible in the Fischerstadt district and still serve as flood protection. These preserved structures show how the military past continues to have practical value today.
