Linienstraße 40, Residential complex in Berlin-Mitte, Germany.
Linienstraße 40 is a residential building on a triangular plot where Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße and Linienstraße meet, constructed with a dark concrete exterior. Inside, nine apartments of varying sizes sit across seven floors, each receiving daylight through openings in the upper sections.
Completed in 2010, this building stepped away from the traditional rebuilding methods that shaped Berlin-Mitte after reunification. The project represented a choice to place contemporary architecture alongside existing historic structures rather than imitating them.
The building resulted from collaboration between architects and an artist working together to shape its design. Its bold black facade stands out visibly against neighboring historic structures, reflecting a different creative approach to residential design.
The site sits at a street intersection with clear visibility and can be reached from both neighboring streets. Keep in mind that this is a private residential building, so visitors can observe the exterior and surroundings but cannot enter the units.
The building rests on a pressure-resistant foam layer that absorbs vibrations and noise coming from below. This practical solution helps reduce disturbances for residents living above Berlin's bustling streets and historic underground infrastructure.
