Schloss Hohengebraching, Architectural heritage monument at Pentling, Germany
Schloss Hohengebraching in Pentling consists of an "Old Castle" and a "New Castle". The two-storey Old Castle dates from 1834, with a right-angled single-storey wing under a hipped roof and cellars. The three-storey New Castle, with a gabled front and coat-of-arms panel, dates from 1727 and incorporates older parts from 1573 and 1670. The courtyard gate with driveway, pedestrian gate and coat-of-arms panel is from 1574.
In 1570 Duke Albrecht of Bavaria sold the Hohengebraching estate to Abbot Blasius Baumgartner of St. Emmeram, who had a small castle built in 1573 as a retreat for himself and his monks; Duke Albrecht granted it freedom on 1 September 1574. Prince-Abbot Anselm Godin de Tampezo added an eastern extension in 1727 as a summer residence. After secularisation Abbot Steiglehner leased the estate from 1803, ending the lease in 1811 after French troops plundered the castle in the coalition wars.
The name Hohengebraching comes from the estate Duke Albrecht of Bavaria sold in 1570 to Abbot Blasius Baumgartner of St. Emmeram, who turned it into a retreat for himself and his monks. The abbots kept it as a summer residence until secularisation in 1803. A plaque beside the year 1573 survives on the building, and a memorial tablet of 1814 is set into the courtyard wall.
The complex stands at Kirchplatz 4–8 and Schloßstraße 4–6 in Hohengebraching, part of Pentling, with the parish church of Mariä Himmelfahrt directly beside it. The ensemble is split into the Altes Schloss, the Neues Schloss, the former brewery and a Stadel around a courtyard; the gate with its pedestrian door and coat-of-arms panel dates from 1574. The buildings are private and not open as a museum, so the courtyard gate, the 1573 inscription panel and the 1814 memorial plaque on the courtyard wall are what can be seen from outside.
The castle shows building elements from different times that are woven together and offer insight into the varied building history. If you look closely, you can see how building techniques and preferences changed over the course of time.
