Burg Lantershofen, Medieval castle in Lantershofen, Germany
Burg Lantershofen is a castle in Lantershofen, Rhineland-Palatinate, featuring a two-story main building with a mansard roof and turret located next to the church on Graf-Blankard-Strasse. The structure underwent comprehensive renovation that restored its stonework while maintaining its historical character.
The structure was built in 1376 and changed hands multiple times, including ownership by Gerhard Blanckart von Ahrweiler in 1485 and Graf von Wickenburg around 1800. Each change in ownership left marks on the building's design and function over the centuries.
The castle displays late medieval architectural features that visitors can see in its stonework and roof design. The building underwent significant changes during the 17th and 18th centuries that remain visible in its mixed style.
The site is accessible from outside and can be viewed from the public areas near the church on the village square. A walk around the perimeter gives the best view of the entire structure and its architectural details.
The foundation may contain remnants of Roman walls, pointing to one of the earliest Frankish settlements on the left bank of the Ahr river. This lower layer of the structure connects the medieval castle to an even older past of the region.
