Burg Traunstein

Burg Traunstein are the remains of a medieval castle positioned on a hill overlooking the town, with foundations and stone walls still visible today. The preserved structures show how a fortified stronghold of that era was designed and laid out.

The castle was first mentioned in 1245 and served different rulers, including the Salzburg Archbishopric and Bavarian powers. It was destroyed in 1704 and left in ruins after that.

The ruins show how castles in this region were built and what role they played for local noble families. You can still see how the walls were arranged and understand why this location mattered so much in medieval times.

The site is located on a hill outside Traunstein and is reachable by foot, though the climb is moderately steep. There are no visitor facilities on-site, so plan ahead and check local access conditions before visiting.

The castle once controlled a bridge over the Traun River and was a crucial checkpoint for salt trade routes between Bad Reichenhall and Munich. This strategic position made the fortress essential for regional commerce and power in Upper Bavaria.
