Burgruine, Castle ruin in Castell, Germany

Burgruine is a castle ruin in Castell that occupies an elevated site in Bavaria. The remaining stonework and wall fragments reveal the layout and construction of the former fortress, which once served as a fortification on the hillside.

The castle was founded in medieval times as a defensive stronghold and shaped the landscape of the region for centuries. Over time it fell into decline and was never rebuilt, leaving only the ruins we see today.

The site is openly accessible and offers views of the surrounding area around Castell. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is uneven and partly overgrown with vegetation and loose stones.

Just west of the surviving ruins rises a knoll that formed the motte of the fortification "Altcastell"; the Burgstall itself lies at 396.6 m above sea level, only 2.19 m higher than the Herrenberg ridge at 394.41 m. The steep slopes around the site are farmed today, so the ruins stand among vineyards.
