Protestant Church, Protestant heritage church in Konz-Karthaus, Germany

The Protestant Church Konz-Karthaus is a white-plastered Historicist building completed in 1897 to a design by Georg Lübke, altered in parts by the Prussian Ministry of Public Works and built by the Trier district building inspector Brauweiler. Its square tower carries a dark louvered spire, and light stone quoins trim the corners. A large arched tracery window with a moulded surround sits on the right side wall, beside a low curved porch with a small conical roof; a sign reading "7.74 Uhr" stands near it.

Protestant workers and railway officials settled in Conz and Merzlich from 1856/1857; by 1884 their community numbered 120 to 150. After services were first held in the railway workshop dining hall on 17 August 1884, the congregation became a vicariate in 1889 and a parish in 1895. The foundation stone was laid on 9 July 1896; Georg Lübke's competition design was executed by Trier building inspector Brauweiler, and the church was consecrated on 19 September 1897.

The parish grew from railway workers and officials who settled in Conz and Merzlich from 1856/1857; services were first held on 17 August 1884 in the dining hall of the Royal Railway Side Workshop, every four weeks. The congregation became a vicariate in 1889 and an independent parish in 1895. Since 1930, after Conz and Merzlich merged into Konz, the community has been called Konz-Karthaus.

The church stands on the square midway between the old villages of Konz and Merzlich, with the 1894 parish house directly to its south and the former Protestant school 15 metres to the north. The sign "7.74 Uhr" by the curved porch refers to the parish's morning service time. Access follows the congregation's schedule, so check service times before visiting.

The church was funded partly by Kaiser Wilhelm II, who gave 10,000 Mark as an "allerhöchstes Gnadengeschenk"; the whole building with interior cost 27,600 Mark, plus 2,275 Mark for the bells. Divided among the 130 seats, that came to 212 Mark per seat, when an industrial worker earned about 40 Mark a month.
