Ammunition depot Brüggen-Bracht, Military ammunition storage facility in Viersen, Germany.
The Ammunition Depot Brüggen-Bracht is a military storage site in the Viersen district of western Germany, built to keep munitions and explosives in secure conditions. The grounds are enclosed by a secured perimeter and contain several reinforced bunkers and storage buildings set within a forested area.
The depot was set up in the years after World War II and served as a strategic storage point for both the Bundeswehr and Allied forces during the Cold War. After that period ended, its role was gradually reviewed and adapted to changing security needs.
The depot takes its name from the two nearby towns of Brüggen and Bracht, which frame the site on either side. Travelers driving through the surrounding farmland can still spot the fences and warning signs that mark the boundary between the military zone and the open countryside.
The site is closed to the public for security reasons and can only be seen from outside along the public roads nearby. All barriers and warning signs must be respected, as entering the grounds is not permitted.
The bunkers on the grounds were built to withstand a nuclear strike, making them a rare example of military construction from the height of the Cold War. This type of hardened design is now found at very few active sites in Germany.
