Pestalozzistrasse Synagogue, Liberal synagogue in Charlottenburg, Germany
Pestalozzistrasse Synagogue is a synagogue building in Charlottenburg completed in 1913. The structure accommodates both male and female congregants in separate sections, with side and upper galleries designated for women worshippers.
The building was designed by architect Ernst Dorn and constructed between 1911 and 1913. It sustained damage during the November 1938 attacks but survived destruction because of its sheltered courtyard location.
The congregation today uses organ music and a mixed choir in its services, reflecting liberal Jewish traditions adapted to the local community. This musical approach to prayer creates a distinctive worship style that has developed over generations.
The building hosts regular services on Saturdays that welcome visitors. If you want to view the interior and architecture, check visiting hours in advance as access may be limited to certain days and times.
The services here follow a distinctive pattern where prayers alternate between the cantor and the congregation. Nearly every prayer is sung rather than spoken, giving the worship experience a notably musical character.
