Kunstmuseum Bremerhaven is an art museum in this North Sea port city with dark brick walls spanning three floors. Inside, fourteen exhibition rooms showcase contemporary works from the twentieth century to the present day.
Founded in 1886 by a local art association, the museum received its first major collection of paintings through a donation in 1908. This gift laid the foundation for its growth into an important exhibition space.
The Kunstverein Bremerhaven, founded in 1886, has around 600 members (2014) and runs the Kunsthalle next door, where more than 300 exhibitions have been shown since 1964. Some artists had their first public exhibition here. The annual programme of six to nine changing shows also covers architecture, literature and art history.
The Kunstmuseum and the neighbouring Kunsthalle stand together by Theodor-Heuss-Platz at Karlsburg 1, in the city centre. The museum occupies a compact three-storey cube of dark clinker brick with 14 rooms and about 700 m² of exhibition space; the Kunsthalle, connected to it, has a glazed upper storey added in 1986. Look for the man and woman figures by Stephan Balkenhol mounted on the outer walls of the two buildings.
The Kunsthalle's exterior walls carry two figures by Stephan Balkenhol, a man on one wall and a woman on the other. The museum building itself stands on the site of the former indoor swimming pool and belongs to the Städtische Wohnungsgesellschaft Bremerhaven (Stäwog).
