The Stellmoor-Ahrensburger Tunneltal is a nature reserve near Ahrensburg that includes glacial valleys, wetlands, riparian forests, ponds, and reed beds. These different habitats with rare bog areas form a diverse ecosystem within a small space.
The area was protected in 1982 and preserves archaeological sites where some of the earliest arrows in human history were found. These discoveries show that humans have used the region since the Old Stone Age.
The area shows traces of ancient reindeer hunters who lived here during the Stone Age and left behind their tools. Visitors can still see how the landscape shaped these early people.
The reserve has several well-marked walking trails, including the Alfred Rust trail with information panels about geology and ecology. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the ground can be muddy, especially in wet areas.
The area is home to several rare animal species, including the Crested Newt, the Blue Hawker dragonfly, and the Large Emperor Dragonfly. These special species make it an important refuge for uncommon wildlife in the region.
