Carl-Friedrich-Flemming-Klinik

Carl-Friedrich-Flemming-Klinik is a psychiatric hospital in Schwerin with five specialized medical departments and around 450 places for inpatient and day clinic care. The building sits within a spacious park-like landscape that preserves the character of a 19th-century healing institution.

The clinic was founded in 1830 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I and designed by architect Carl Heinrich Wünsch to initially accommodate 150 patients. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, it expanded multiple times and became one of the larger psychiatric facilities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The facility emerged during a period when psychiatry was being reimagined and modern healing institutions were understood as places of recovery. Visitors can still see the park-like setting that reflects this holistic approach today.

The grounds are easily accessible and offer ample parking for visitors at the perimeter. The buildings are connected by paved paths and roads that are easy to explore on foot.

The building was designed with the idea that structured work and routine could aid recovery, so workshops and craft areas were integrated into the facility from the start. This belief shapes the architecture even today and reveals an innovative approach to healing from the 19th century.
