Deiseler Tunnel, Railway tunnel near Deisel, Germany
The Deiseler Tunnel is a railway passage near Deisel that extends 202 meters through Kesselberg mountain. The structure features sandstone abutments and ornamental details on its northern portal, including pilasters and friezes.
Construction began in April 1846 by the Kassel-based Conrad Siebrecht company and was completed in June 1847. This project made it the oldest railway tunnel in Hesse and represented a significant engineering achievement of the era.
The tunnel and its companion building are protected as cultural monuments under Hessian law, preserving historical architectural features from the 1840s. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship of that era in the decorated sandstone portals and ornamental details.
Access is available from April through October for cyclists and hikers. During winter months from November to March, the passage closes to protect the bats that hibernate there.
The excavation needed no temporary support structures during construction because the rock was exceptionally hard. This allowed workers to line the passage directly with brick without complex scaffolding.
