Winterbergdenkmal, Monument ruins near Spichern Heights, Saarbrücken, Germany.
The Winterbergdenkmal was a structure on an elevated plateau featuring a 30-meter tower and a surrounding promenade hall with neo-Gothic arches. The buildings were adorned with decorative elements and stood at the highest point between Saarbrücken and Spichern Heights.
The monument was built between 1872 and 1874 to commemorate Prussia's victory in the Battle of Spichern. Emperor Wilhelm I financed its construction with 2000 thalers.
The monument's design incorporated a ten-sided hall meant to represent unity among German tribes. The walls displayed the names of military regiments that fought in the 1870 battle.
The ruins stand at the highest point and are accessible via President Baltz Street. This location offers a good viewpoint from which to see the surrounding area.
German military forces demolished the monument in September 1939 to prevent enemy aircraft from using it as a navigation reference. Only the stone foundation and a base reconstructed in the 1970s remain from the original structure.
