The prison complex consists of six detention houses, an administration building, a school building, a gymnasium, and a kitchen pavilion spanning 10.5 hectares.

The facility opened in March 1970 for young offenders, and in 1989 a new building complex was added to accommodate adult inmates.

The institution operates educational programs where young inmates can complete their secondary education and receive vocational training in six different workshop areas.

The prison has capacity for 144 juveniles and 144 adult males, with 48 places located at the Saarlouis external facility for open detention.

The prison operates a store called Knast-Lädchen that sells wooden crafts and handmade items produced by young inmates, with proceeds supporting rehabilitation programs.
