The Himmelsberg stands at 489.7 meters in elevation, featuring a plateau-like summit region that extends between Giesel and Kleinheiligkreuz in Hesse.
During the 19th century, the mountain contained brown coal deposits beneath its lava rocks, leading to mining operations that continued until 1873.
The mountain area maintains strong connections to traditional milling practices, with a 500-year-old mill still producing flour using historical methods.
Multiple marked hiking trails cross the mountain through the Gieseler Forest, connecting various points including Sieberzmühle, Hessenmühle, and the Kleinheiligkreuz Chapel.
The geology of Himmelsberg includes a bunter sandstone base with salt deposits from the Zechstein Sea, connecting to the K+S Neuhof potash mine tunnels.
