Schloss Hardt, archäologische Stätte und Schloss in Großaitingen, Landkreis Augsburg, Schwaben, Bayern
Schloss Hardt is a two-story manor house in Großaitingen-Hardt with a steep gable roof and a small clock tower topped with an onion-shaped roof. The building is surrounded by a wall with towers and has rectangular windows framed by stone bands on the ground floor, giving it a simple, functional appearance.
The castle was likely built around 1494 by Heinrich Dachs and changed owners several times over the centuries, including members of the Törring family and later the St. Ulrich monastery in Augsburg. It was expanded around 1760, and after a fire in 1946, it was rebuilt, though the original St. Anna chapel was destroyed and not restored.
The castle bears the name of the Hardt village district where it stands. The St. Anna chapel shaped the character of the place, showing how faith mattered to past residents, which remains visible today in the small memorial chapel in the park.
The castle is private property and can only be viewed from outside; the buildings themselves are not open to visitors. It is advisable to respect the privacy of the owners and admire the site during walks in the surrounding area.
A distinctive feature is the small memorial chapel built in the park after the 1946 fire, which honors the tradition of the original St. Anna chapel. This chapel was reconstructed in the 1950s as a humble version to preserve the spiritual significance of the place.
