Castellum Mattiacorum, Roman military fortress in Mainz-Kastel, Germany
The stone fortress measures 71 by 98 meters and stands on the right bank of the Rhine River, facing the city of Mainz.
Romans constructed the initial fortress around 11 BCE when they built a temporary bridge across the Rhine during their territorial expansion eastward.
Archaeological excavations in 1986 revealed foundations of a Roman triumphal arch, suggesting ceremonial connections to military campaigns in Germanic territories.
The Castellum Museum in Mainz-Kastel presents artifacts and information about the fortress, including a collection of over 750 ancient coins.
The fortress settlement included a village extending 250 meters east-west and 500 meters north-south, protected by defensive walls from the 3rd century.
