Römerbrücke, Roman stone bridge in Mainz, Germany

The Römerbrücke spans across the Rhine River with stone pillars supporting a wooden superstructure, connecting both sides of the ancient Roman settlement.

Construction of the bridge began around 27 CE during the reign of Emperor Augustus, featuring 21 pillars that accommodated the wider Rhine River of antiquity.

The bridge represented Roman engineering methods, combining stone pillars with wooden upper sections to balance construction costs and maintenance requirements.

Archaeological remains of the bridge pillars lie beneath the Rhine River at coordinates 50.0062 latitude and 8.27758 longitude in central Mainz.

Research in 2004 revealed wooden fragments within the bridge structure that confirmed earlier construction dates than previously documented.
