Mainzer Römerschiffe, Maritime archaeology museum in Mainz, Germany
Mainzer Römerschiffe is a museum displaying five Roman military wooden vessels from the 4th century, preserved as original remains alongside full-size reconstructions and detailed scale models. Two distinct ship types are featured: vessels designed for troop transport and others built for river patrol missions.
Workers discovered at least ten Roman wooden ships in 1981 during excavation work on the south side of the city. The museum was established in 1994 to preserve these finds from the Roman period and make them accessible to the public.
Craftspeople in the workshop reconstruct ancient vessels using traditional methods and local materials, demonstrating how Roman shipbuilders worked on the Rhine.
The museum is located near the central train station and is currently closed for major renovations expected to finish in spring 2025. When it reopens, the expanded facility will include exhibits on ancient transportation systems throughout the Roman world.
The ships come from a period when the Rhine was a crucial Roman military route, providing detailed insight into ancient engineering practices. The two ship types reveal how Romans designed their river fleets differently depending on whether they needed transport capacity or patrol speed.
