Natural History Museum Mainz, Natural history museum in central Mainz, Germany.
The Natural History Museum of Mainz contains collections of regional wildlife, fossils, and specimens representing different geological periods of Earth's development.
The museum building occupies the former Reichklarakloster, a convent founded in 1272 by Humbert zum Widder and Elisabeth, which later became university property.
The museum maintains scientific partnerships with Rwanda since 1982, enabling knowledge exchange and enriching the collections with African specimens and research materials.
Visitors can explore the museum Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 to 17:00 and weekends from 10:00 to 18:00, with admission fees of 3 euros per person.
The institution houses three specimens of the extinct quagga, making it one of the largest collections worldwide of this South African plains zebra subspecies.
