Deutsche Sporthalle, bâtiment de Berlin, Allemagne
The Deutsche Sporthalle was a large multi-purpose hall built in Berlin-Friedrichshain in 1951 that hosted various events and sports activities. The building featured high ceilings, broad open interior spaces, and a flat roof with minimal columns, allowing flexibility for different uses.
The building was constructed in 1951 in less than five months as part of the early Stalin-era architectural style with bold shapes and strong lines. It was demolished in 1972 after serving the neighborhood for just two decades.
The hall served as a gathering point where people from different backgrounds came together for sports and major events. Its design and purpose reflected the values and aspirations of its era in the city's social life.
The building no longer exists today and cannot be visited in person. Visitors can learn about its history through photographs and documented accounts available in Berlin's museums and archives.
The hall was built to host the Third World Festival of Youth and Students, a major international gathering held in Berlin in 1951. Designed by architect Richard Paulick, its entrance featured a large mural depicting athletic figures that symbolized the sporting spirit of the era.
