Brunnen, Bronze water well at Residenzplatz, Würzburg, Germany.
The Frankoniabrunnen is a bronze water fountain at Residenzplatz in Würzburg featuring a central sculptural structure with multiple water outlets. Water flows from various points into a wide circular basin at ground level, creating a calm flow pattern.
The fountain was designed and built in 1894 by Ferdinand von Miller as a tribute to Prince Regent Luitpold, who was born at the Würzburg Residence. The work commemorated an important connection between the prince and the city.
The fountain is named after Franconia, a mythological figure representing the Franconia region. The plaza around it serves as a natural gathering space where visitors and locals pause to observe the surroundings and each other.
The fountain stands directly in front of the Residence palace on the main plaza and is easily reached on foot. Visitors can survey the entire plaza area from this central location and explore the surrounding historic buildings.
Miller was also famous for creating the Bavaria statue in Munich, and this fountain displays his characteristic style of blending mythology with fountain architecture. The work demonstrates how he combined symbolic representation with functional water distribution in an elegant way.
