Brunnen, Neo-Baroque fountain on Residenzplatz, Würzburg, Germany

The Frankoniabrunnen is a neo-Baroque monumental fountain on Residenzplatz, west of the Würzburg Residence. Its architecture was designed by Gabriel von Seidl and the bronze sculptures were cast by Ferdinand von Miller. A central pedestal rises from a wide basin, crowned by the bronze figure of Frankonia in armour and warrior's cloak, wearing the ducal hat and holding the Rennfähnlein in her left hand, her right hand extended. Around the pedestal stand stone figures of Walther von der Vogelweide, Matthias Grünewald and Tilman Riemenschneider, all facing the cathedral.

The fountain was created in 1894 to honour Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria, unveiled on 3 June 1894 in his presence. The neo-baroque design was by architect Gabriel von Seidl, with bronze sculptures by Ferdinand von Miller. It replaced an iron court grille removed in 1821, after Würzburg passed to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814.

The bronze figure is Frankonia, the allegory of Franconia, wearing armour, a warrior's cloak and the ducal hat. In her left hand she holds the Rennfähnlein, the banner also found on Würzburg's city flag, while her right hand is extended in a gesture of rule. Around the pedestal stand the poet Walther von der Vogelweide, the painter Matthias Grünewald and the sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider, all facing the cathedral.

The fountain stands directly in front of the Residence palace on the main plaza and is easily reached on foot. Visitors can survey the entire plaza area from this central location and explore the surrounding historic buildings.

The fountain replaced the wrought-iron Ehrenhof grille, which was removed in 1821 after Würzburg passed to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814. Prince Regent Luitpold gave the city the Kiliansbrunnen in return, unveiled on 8 July 1895 in front of the main railway station.
