Hutier-Kaserne, Military barracks in Hanau, Germany
The Hutier-Kaserne is a former military complex in Hanau with several buildings arranged around a central parade ground, constructed in plain concrete style. The overall layout is austere and orderly, with structures designed for efficient military administration and quarters.
The complex was built between 1911 and 1913 and initially housed the Prussian II Railway Regiment. After World War II it served as a displaced persons camp, and was later converted to house the fire department.
The complex demonstrates early military architectural principles that prioritized functionality and rapid construction over decoration. This building approach influenced how barracks were designed across Germany for decades to follow.
The former barracks is located in the Lamboy district and now houses the volunteer fire department and emergency response center. Visitors will find modern operations centers alongside the historic military buildings, though access to certain areas may be restricted.
The construction contracts were deliberately awarded to Hanau companies by Mayor Eugen Gebeschus to generate local business tax revenue for the city. This local economic strategy was not unusual at the time and helped support the region's industrial growth.
