Hanau, Administrative city in Hesse, Germany
Hanau is a city in Hesse at the meeting point of the Main and Kinzig rivers, roughly 25 kilometers east of Frankfurt within the Rhine-Main area. The new town with its market square forms the historical center, surrounded by residential districts and commercial zones along both rivers.
The city charter was granted in 1303 after a castle settlement had been documented since 1143. Following destruction during the Second World War, the current layout emerged with modern buildings and reconstructed quarters.
A bronze statue in the old town honors the brothers who were born here and later shaped German storytelling through their collection of tales. Visitors also find Philippsruhe Palace along the Main riverbank, where museums now display regional collections and decorative arts.
The main railway station connects several regional lines and offers direct access to Frankfurt Airport. Paths along the riverbanks are suitable for walking and most points of interest can be reached on foot or by local buses.
Workshops and ateliers for precious metal processing have shaped the cityscape for centuries, with goldsmiths operating in different quarters. The Heraeus Group, active worldwide in precious metal technology, maintains its headquarters here along with a visitor center.
