Staatspark Wilhelmsbad

Staatspark Wilhelmsbad is a 37.5-hectare (93-acre) estate in Hanau featuring late Baroque structures and an English garden designed in the early style. The grounds blend historical buildings with manicured lawns and water features that run throughout the property.

Prince Wilhelm of Hessen-Kassel commissioned this former spa resort in 1777, funding it through revenue from renting Hessian soldiers to Britain. The estate was designed as a display of princely power and prosperity during the enlightened absolutism period.

The theater building showcases original stage machinery from the 1780s, allowing visitors to see how performances were created during that era. You can observe the ropes, pulleys, and mechanical systems that once brought scenes to life on stage.

The park is easily explored on foot, with open areas and wooded sections allowing visitors to choose different routes based on interest. Historical buildings are accessible inside, where the pace and comfort differ from the outdoor grounds.

A wooden carousel from 1780 still operates within the grounds, standing as Germany's oldest preserved carousel in use. This working attraction offers a rare glimpse into entertainment from the 1700s.
