Hagen castle, Cultural heritage monument and archaeological site in central Hanau, Germany

Hagen Castle was the residence of the Counts of Hanau, and today only foundations and auxiliary structures remain at the site. These ruins sit north of the city hall near the Kinzig River and form part of a public park with walking paths and educational displays.

First mentioned in written records in 1234 as 'Castrum in Hagenowen', the structure served as the seat of the Counts of Hanau for centuries. It remained a residence until the 19th century, when it gradually fell into decline.

The grounds connect to memorials celebrating the Brothers Grimm, who were born in Hanau and shaped the town's identity as a cultural center. Visitors encounter plaques and monuments that tell stories of this literary connection.

The grounds are open daily with level, easy-to-walk paths through the park where you can explore the remains at your own pace. Information boards are positioned throughout to help visitors understand the site without needing prior knowledge.

Excavations have uncovered different building phases starting from the 16th century, visible in preserved foundation walls and historical records. These layers reveal how the structure was repeatedly modified and adapted over the centuries.
