Steinbruch an der Schanz, Geological quarry in Burgberg im Allgäu, Germany.
Steinbruch an der Schanz is a geological site in Burgberg im Allgäu that exposes limestone and sandstone layers in vertical walls. These rock formations belong to the South Helveticum fold structure and reveal how sediment layers were tilted and compressed over millions of years.
The site began extracting stone in the 1930s and operated continuously until 1999 under a local company. The quarry then transitioned from industrial use to its current role as a geological site for education and observation.
The formation ranks among Bavaria's 100 most beautiful geotopes, revealing substantial geological evidence of ancient marine deposits through its sedimentary structures.
The site has been reclaimed since 2000 with a parking area on one side and a marked geotope zone on the other. You can walk around the quarry floor and view the exposed rock walls from different angles.
The quarry contains notable mineral specimens, particularly pyrite crystals in cubic and octahedral forms. Visitors may also spot rare strontianite deposits, making this a special destination for those interested in minerals and stone formations.
