Neues Schloss, Renaissance castle ruins in Tylsen, Germany
Neues Schloss is a three-story Renaissance castle ruin situated on the western edge of Tylsen village. A broad water-filled moat surrounds the ruin, forming an integral part of the site's structure.
Thomas II von dem Knesebeck started building this castle in 1620. A century later, major expansions were added to the northern section between 1853 and 1856.
The castle shows how local nobility lived during the Renaissance and later periods through its remaining rooms and structures. The architecture reveals the tastes and ideas of those who dwelt and ruled within its walls.
The castle can be reached from south of Salzwedel via routes B71 and B248, followed by local roads L8 and K1401. The exterior is accessible to visitors, though care should be taken as the ruins are partially unstable.
The castle lost its roof during land reform from 1948 to 1949, when roof tiles were dismantled for use elsewhere. This action marked the beginning of the ruin's transformation into what visitors see today.
