Theater 53, Former theatre in the Landwehr district, Hamburg, Germany.

Theater 53 was a cellar theater beneath a pub with red and gray walls and around 130 seats arranged in two sections facing the stage. Access was through the pub at Landwehr 25, where a nameplate on the building marked the underground venue.

The theater was founded in 1953 by Uwe Friedrichsen, Markus Scholz, and Karl-Ulrich Meves, beginning in a barrack on Rothenbaumchaussee. In 1959 it relocated to an air raid shelter on Landwehr, where it operated until 1965.

The venue was known for experimental theater and attracted audiences seeking new forms of stage art. It brought works by contemporary playwrights to the stage and offered a space for artistic exploration.

The theater was located below street level and required navigation through the pub to reach the venue. The cramped setting and small capacity meant that performances were an intense and intimate experience.

The cellar theater was created by repurposing a World War II air raid shelter, giving the structure a second life. This conversion of a military building for artistic use was characteristic of postwar Hamburg and its search for new cultural spaces.
