Schloss Syburg

Schloss Syburg is a castle complex in Bergen that stands on a high plateau and contains a sturdy gate structure, main residential wings, and service buildings. The gate tower rises three stories with angular turrets at its corners, while the residential sections spread across the grounds in an organized pattern.

The castle was founded in the 11th century as a water fortress defending the surrounding lands. Between 1749 and 1754, it underwent major renovation work that gave it a completely new Baroque appearance and structure.

The castle reflects the tastes of its different owners through its mixed architectural styles across the courtyards and facades. Each room and wing tells a story of how people lived here across several centuries of changing fashions and needs.

The castle sits atop a raised plateau with open views across the surrounding landscape. Visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the architectural details and the rural scenery that frames the buildings.

The castle grounds feature a walled park with a Baroque garden pavilion and an orangery that were built in the mid-1700s just west of the old moat. These garden additions reveal how the owners wanted to display both formal beauty and exotic plants during the Rococo period.
