Hilfskrankenhaus Gunzenhausen, Underground bunker hospital in Gunzenhausen, Germany.
Hilfskrankenhaus Gunzenhausen is an underground bunker hospital in Gunzenhausen, Germany, extending five meters beneath the vocational school. The entire complex consists of three separate bunker units distributed across the town, connected by long corridors.
Construction took place between 1963 and 1965 as part of a regional program to build 44 protective facilities across Bavaria. The installation was designed to accommodate up to 1,400 patients from Nuremberg, Fürth, and Ansbach during emergencies.
The name refers to its role as an auxiliary medical facility, reflecting how Bavarian communities prepared for emergencies during the Cold War era. Visitors can still see how medical care was organized under extreme conditions.
Access to the facility requires advance booking through the Gunzenhausen tourist office, with group sizes limited to a maximum of 20 people. Warm clothing is recommended even on hot summer days due to the constant cool temperature inside.
The interior maintains a constant temperature of 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year, regardless of outside weather conditions. Much of the original medical equipment from the 1960s remains on site, making the emergency planning of that era tangible.
