Gunzenhausen is a town in Middle Franconia positioned along the Altmühl River, where water meets rolling countryside dotted with lakes. Narrow streets wind through a compact center lined with houses, shops, and guesthouses, while green riverbanks offer space for walking and resting.
Emperor Ludwig the Pious transferred the monastery Gunzinhusir to Ellwangen in 823, which marks the first written mention of the settlement. Over the centuries, it grew into a fortified town, and portions of its walls and towers still stand today.
The name comes from a Frankish settler called Gunzo, whose farmstead once occupied this land. Visitors today find cafés and shops grouped around a central marketplace where locals gather for weekly markets.
