Mauerner Höhlen, Prehistoric cave system in Rennertshofen, Germany.
Mauerner Höhlen is a cave system made up of several connected chambers that stretch for about 121 meters in total length. Individual rooms reach widths of approximately 20 meters in places and display natural rock formations formed over thousands of years.
The cave system was inhabited during the Old Stone Age by people who made tools and left evidence of their presence. Archaeological digging uncovered artifacts from this early period, including a carved stone figurine of a seated woman.
The caves served as temporary homes in Stone Age times, where people made their tools and prepared food. Visitors can still sense how these ancient inhabitants organized their daily routines within these rock chambers.
The cave entrance is secured with metal grids to protect the archaeological contents and ensure visitor safety. Information boards at the entrance explain the geology of the caves and the history of the surrounding Urdonautal valley area.
The cave system sits at about 425 meters elevation on steep slopes, offering Stone Age people both shelter and views over the valley below. This strategic position made it an ideal refuge from weather and possible dangers of the time.
